It all started in 1951 with the presentation of a camel-colored coat and a geranium red suit. Max Mara was founded by Achille Maramotti who decided, after taking a degree in law, to dedicate himself to the family passion: tailoring. It was a passion inherited from his great-grandmother Marina Rinaldi, who in the late 1800s managed an elegant atelier in the heart of Reggio Emilia. This first collection, with its essential and exacting style, already embodied the features of the subsequent products: clean cuts and precise lines, models inspired by the brilliant French style in vogue at the time, reinvented and redesigned according to a typically Italian taste. Other collections followed, and the immediate success didn‘t wane.
The Max Mara Group today represents a point of reference for Italian and international prêt-à-porter. Max Mara offers a wide range of collections, numerous identities to choose from, all based on the common foundation of quality, style, and respect for the individual that this Reggio Emilia-based company consistently offers in each of its products.
Over the years, designers such as Emmanuelle Kahn, Karl Lagerfeld, Guy Paulin, Jean Charles Castelbajac, Dolce & Gabbana, and Narciso Rodriguez have contributed to defining the Max Mara woman, without signatures or roles being specified to the consumer. This system of collaboration with Italian and foreign designers has always been one of the group‘s fundamental strengths: each of these great designers has contributed to developing the creativity of Max Mara without monopolization, therefore maintaining intact the concept of a product based on the dynamic and effective teamwork that characterises the Max Mara Group.
Photographers such as Sarah Moon, Paolo Roversi, Fabrizio Ferri, Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Richard Avedon, and Steven Klein, along with a host of other image professionals, have been involved in the Max Mara advertising campaigns, creating historical images that synthesise the dynamism of the fashion and style of millions of women.

Marina Rinaldi

In 1980 the Max Mara Fashion Group gives birth to Marina Rinaldi, a great challenge, created for dressing women over size 44, to dress them with style, not to “cover” them. It‘s a turning point in the history of clothing: in no part of the world, up to that moment, had there been a company dedicated to women with a few extra kilos, following their tastes, finally satisfying their desire to be feminine and fashionable.
Marina Rinaldi means quality in fabrics. Style. The woman who wears Marina Rinaldi doesn‘t feel as if she was wearing a container. She feels elegant.
